Reading automatically

rp2003plusonlyThe easiest way to use ReadPlease PLUS is to set the option for ReadPlease PLUS to automatically read whatever is copied to the Windows Clipboard.

ReadPlease PLUS can automatically read (or play) whatever text is copied to the Windows Clipboard (Edit|Copy) from any application.

Important Note:
If you are not familiar with the Windows Clipboard check out the Windows Clipboard Tutorial. If you have ever copied or pasted something in a Windows application, you have already used the Windows Clipboard. When you copy something, it is sent to the Windows Clipboard. When you paste something, it is pasted into your document from the Windows Clipboard.

For example, with this feature turned on, you can simply go to any Windows program, select some text, copy the text to the Clipboard and ReadPlease will read it for you.

The first time you run ReadPlease PLUS, this option will be set to:
OFF - Do not automatically Play clipboard

Note:
If you copy text to the Clipboard it will play. If you copy the exact same text a second time, then ReadPlease may not play it. The reason for this is many Microsoft applications use the Clipboard for things it was not meant to do. To prevent this from happening, when you select the text a second time, just choose a slightly longer or shorter variation from the first one.

To enable this feature, click on the large button as shown and a drop down list will appear with the options as shown here. Just select the option you wish to use.

Options explained:

OFF - Do not automatically play Clipboard
When text is copied to the Clipboard, ReadPlease will do nothing (default).

ON - Paste at beginning of document and Play
Anything copied to the Clipboard will be automatically pasted into the beginning of the ReadPlease document and read aloud (Play).

ON - Paste at end of document and Play
Anything copied to the Clipboard will be automatically pasted at the end of the ReadPlease document and read aloud (Play).

ON - Clear document, Paste and Play
The ReadPlease document will be cleared and then anything copied to the Clipboard will be automatically pasted into the ReadPlease document and read aloud (Play). Note that you will lose whatever text was there previously. This option is useful if you never want to save any text or review the text that has been read.

ON - Paste at end of document, but don't Play
Anything copied to the Clipboard will be automatically pasted at the end of the ReadPlease document and but will not be automatically read aloud. If you want to assemble some text for later reading, this option could be used.

Other Ways to Control Clipboard Options
If you are using ReadPlease in the System Tray (this is set in Tools|Options), there is another way of setting the Clipboard reading options. You may do this by right-clicking on the ReadPlease icon in the System Tray and set the option there.

Trouble Shooting Clipboard Problems
Sometimes ReadPlease PLUS has problems monitoring the Windows Clipboard. Here are a few of the more common problems.

ReadPlease PLUS isn't copying and playing something.

If you use other software that monitors the Windows Clipboard, there may be a conflict with ReadPlease PLUS automatically reading. If you have problems you could try loading software in a different order - ie. try loading ReadPlease last if you have trouble.

The sending application may not actually be copying the data to the Clipboard. Some applications implement Copy/Paste internally without using the Clipboard (they sometimes put a small piece of text on the Clipboard but don't copy the interesting stuff). Try using the Clipboard Viewer to see if any data of an interesting format is actually on the Clipboard. The Clipboard Viewer's "View Menu" lists the formats on the Clipboard. You could try clearing the content of the Clipboard with the Clipboard Viewer, then doing the copy and see if anything interesting has turned up. If not, there isn't much you can do.

"Can't Empty Clipboard" message from Excel when copying

We think this is a bug in Excel. It seems to put items on the Clipboard, release the Clipboard and then immediately tries to grab hold of the Clipboard again to empty it for some reason. In a multi-tasking environment, of course it can't rely on doing that. Something else may be using the Clipboard, and in this case, it is ReadPlease PLUS. We don't know of any way around it. You could try asking Microsoft what is happening. There are lots of complaints about the way Excel's use of the Clipboard has been implemented on Internet newsgroups. Maybe it will be changed in the future.
